Complete Guide

Cruising 101

Everything you need to know before your first cruise — or your tenth. How it works, which line is right for you, and what nobody bothers to tell you until it's too late.

For First-Timers

How Cruising Actually Works

If you've never cruised before, the whole thing can feel overwhelming. Here's the honest breakdown.

The Basics
Pick Your Ship & Itinerary

Cruises are defined by the ship and the ports it visits. Different ships have wildly different vibes — a Carnival ship and a Celebrity ship feel like different worlds. Patrick helps you match the right one to your travel style.

Know Before You Go
What's Included

Your cabin, most meals, onboard entertainment, and transportation between ports are all included in the base fare. What costs extra: specialty restaurants, drinks packages, shore excursions, gratuities, and Wi-Fi.

The Rhythm
Ports & Sea Days

Most itineraries alternate between port days (get off and explore) and sea days (stay on the ship and enjoy the amenities). The mix varies by itinerary. Patrick helps you find the balance that suits you.

Cruise vs. Land

Which Is Right for You?

⚓ Cruising Is Great If You...

  • Want to see multiple destinations without repacking
  • Travel with a group or family with different interests
  • Love waking up somewhere new each day
  • Want dining, entertainment, and activities all in one place
  • Prefer knowing most costs upfront
  • Want a mix of activity and relaxation

🏠 Land Travel Is Great If You...

  • Want to go deeper into one place rather than broader
  • Love immersing yourself in local culture and neighborhoods
  • Prefer flexibility over a fixed schedule
  • Want to choose your own accommodation style
  • Are visiting a landlocked destination
  • Want to truly feel like you live somewhere for a week

Not sure which is right for your trip? Ask Patrick — that's exactly what he's here for.

Know Before You Book

The Major Cruise Lines, Explained

Every cruise line has a distinct personality. Here's what sets them apart so you can find your match.

Royal Caribbean
Best for: Adventure & Families

Royal Caribbean builds some of the largest, most feature-packed ships in the world. Think FlowRiders, rock climbing walls, zip lines, and ice skating rinks — on a ship. Icon of the Seas, their newest mega-ship, has a full water park with 20 slides. Great for families, active travelers, and anyone who wants options. Patrick is Royal Caribbean certified.

Carnival Cruise Line
Best for: Fun & Value

Carnival is the 'fun ships' line — lively, social, and fantastic value. A great first cruise and an especially good choice for younger travelers, groups, and anyone who loves a party atmosphere. CHEERS! beverage packages, Guy's Burger Joint, and poolside activities keep the energy high. Patrick is Carnival certified.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)
Best for: Freestyle Freedom

Norwegian pioneered 'freestyle cruising' — no fixed dining times, no dress codes, and a lot more flexibility. Their ships have excellent specialty dining, The Haven luxury enclave, and itineraries across Alaska, Europe, and the Caribbean. Great for travelers who don't like feeling locked into a schedule.

Princess Cruises
Best for: Classic & Scenic Cruising

Princess has a more refined, classic feel and is the Alaska specialist — operating more Alaska itineraries than almost anyone. MedallionClass technology lets you order anything to anywhere on the ship. A great choice for older travelers, couples, and anyone who wants a quieter, more elegant experience.

Celebrity Cruises
Best for: Modern Luxury

Celebrity sits between mainstream and luxury — exceptional food, stunning ship design, and a sophisticated atmosphere without the ultra-premium price tag. Their Edge-class ships are some of the most beautifully designed at sea. Great for foodies, design lovers, and travelers who want a step up.

Holland America Line
Best for: Destination-Focused Exploration

Holland America leans more destination-focused and culturally enriching than competitors. Their ships are mid-sized, their onboard atmosphere is calmer, and their itineraries go to places others don't — including a strong Alaska program. A great fit for travelers who care more about where they're going than what's on the ship.

FAQ

Cruising Questions Everyone Asks

Layers for deck time, a swimsuit, at least one nicer outfit for formal nights (if applicable), comfortable walking shoes for ports, and a power strip with USB ports (no surge protectors). The one thing most people forget: a small day bag for port excursions.
Most cruise lines add daily gratuities automatically — typically $16-$20 per person per day. This covers your cabin steward and dining staff. Drinks packages often have gratuities included. Patrick always walks clients through what to expect so there are no surprises on the final bill.
Rarely in the base fare. Most lines offer Wi-Fi packages you can purchase. Prices have dropped significantly in recent years. Some premium lines include it. Patrick can tell you what to expect on your specific ship.
Modern cruise ships are much more stable than most people expect, with stabilizers that significantly reduce motion. The Caribbean and Inside Passage are especially calm. If you're concerned, there are effective remedies — prescription patches, Bonine, and ginger supplements.
At sea, your normal cell plan usually doesn't work without massive roaming charges. In port, you can connect to local Wi-Fi or use an international plan. Most people use the ship's Wi-Fi package at sea and switch to local data in port.
Book Alaska and Europe cruises early — 9-12 months out — because popular sailings and shore excursions sell out. For Caribbean, you have more flexibility and can find last-minute deals. Patrick monitors pricing and alerts clients when it makes sense to book or wait.
No — and this surprises a lot of people. Travel agents are paid by the cruise lines, not by you. You pay the exact same price booking through Patrick as you would directly, but you get expert advice, ongoing support, and someone who advocates for you if something goes wrong.
